Composer’s Note
The Ballad of Maurice Connor reflects my ongoing interest in reinterpreting folk traditions through modern techniques, creating music that amplifies voices often unheard in classical contexts. Commissioned by Trio Montage to honor their British Isles heritage, this four-movement song cycle is inspired by the Irish folk tale The Wonderful Tune. I wrote the lyrics myself, telling the story of the extraordinary piper Maurice Connor. Maurice’s blindness, far from being a limitation or weakness, is an integral part of his gift. The work challenges traditional narratives by offering a rare portrayal of a protagonist with a disability whose story is one of empowerment and triumph, inviting audiences to reflect on how diverse experiences shape artistry and humanity. Blending elements of folklore, lyricism, humor, and a touch of magic, the cycle explores themes of identity, legacy, and the transformative power of art. Maurice’s journey is both a poignant exploration of belonging and sacrifice and a testament to the enduring power of storytelling.
